TGP Chapter 19: Chief Inspector

“Pei Wenxuan, can you stop pretending for a moment?”

After Li Rong gifted the sword to Pei Wenxuan, she had the servants carry the palanquin around the palace. After walking around in the imperial garden, she crouched down on the ground and started playing with a newly flowered crabapple blossom when she saw that the person she sent to Pei Wenxuan had returned. The man came over, stopped in front of her and respectfully said: “Your Highness, it’s over.”

Li Rong nodded. She took the square handkerchief from Jing Lan’s hands and replied, “Yang Quan lacks patience indeed.”

If Yang Quan had taken action later, perhaps he would have lived a few more days. It was just that this was Pei Wenxuan. With his personality, if he didn’t say anything, then so be it, but once he says something, he will make it happen. He said that he would take Yang Quan’s life, so he won’t even give Yang Quan a fighting chance.

When she recalled the things the Yang had done in the previous life, Li Rong also felt that keeping such people would indeed be disastrous.

In the previous life, although the Yang family fought long and hard at the border in the end, they had caused Great Xia to lose five cities in a row. It was not until five years after Li Chuan ascended the throne and led the conquest to reclaim those five cities himself.

Further Context

Cities at the border tend to be scattered and have fewer local inhabitants due to the colder climate, soil, and geography. The topography is less leveled, not suitable for farming, nor are there essential bodies of water nearby for economic development, and most importantly, it is geographically “rocky”/mountainous, so a lot of the land is actually uninhabited. In short, the Yang family lost a substantial amount of Great Xia’s land, probably enough to form an ancient city-state.

It was also a good thing that the Yang family could be subdued earlier this time around.

She had guessed what Pei Wenxuan had done for the most part, but she was a little curious. What exactly did Pei Wenxuan say? She wiped her hands clean with the handkerchief and stood up. She said to Jing Mei: “Go and announce that I will be going to the Imperial Study to talk to Father Emperor.”

Jing Mei immediately heeded the order. Jing Lan supported Li Rong and walked to the Imperial Study at a leisurely pace.

When she arrived at the entrance of the Imperial Study, she saw Fu Lai waiting for her at the doors. He smiled and said, “Your Highness, His Majesty is discussing state affairs with several ministers. Please wait here for a moment.”

Li Rong lightly tapped the palm of her hand with her small fan and nodded: “That will not be a problem. Bengong will wait here in the meantime then.”

“Then this servant will bring a chair for Your Highness?” Fu Lai knew that Her Highness was used to being favored and indulged, so he was quick to please her. Li Rong nodded and only said, “Very well.”

Fu Lai ordered someone to bring a chair over for Li Rong and even placed a small table nearby with tea and cakes on top. Li Rong had someone bring her a book while basking in the sun and drinking tea as she waited to be summoned by Li Ming.

Not long after, an eunuch hastily came over and pressed against Fu Lai’s ear, whispering something. Fu Lai’s face visibly changed. After a moment of contemplation, he whispered: “Bring him in first. I will go and report to His Majesty.”

Having said that, Fu Lai turned around and went back to the Imperial Study. Li Rong pretended to not have heard anything and leisurely turned a page in her book.

A few moments later, Li Rong saw Pei Wenxuan being led in by someone. Pei Wenxuan was hanging his head low as if he was a bit on edge. The hems of his clothes were stained with blood, and his appearance was quite disheveled. The eunuch led him up the steps, and once Pei Wenxuan noticed her, he respectfully said: “Greetings Your Imperial Highness.”

Li Rong heard these words and brought her eyes up to visually assess him from head to toe and smiled: “I saw Pei daren leave the Palace just now, why are you back?” Li Rong spread her fan open to cover the lower half of her face and whispered, “Did you miss me?”

Pei Wenxuan bowed his head lower as if a little embarrassed by Li Rong’s words, but he still calmly replied: “Your Highness is joking. This humble official does not dare to have such thoughts about Your Highness, but something happened on the road, so this one rushed back to report to His Majesty.”

“Tsk.”

Looking at Pei Wenxuan’s appearance, Li Rong couldn’t help but reveal a face of disgust. Pei Wenxuan had dealt with her for many years and had long become immune to her poisonous mouth. Even if she said something to him that was actually funny, Pei Wenxuan could still answer without a single change in expression, let alone that little joke earlier. At times like this, he was no different from the old monks in Buddhist temples who had attained enlightenment and solemnly admonished her: “How absurd.”

Of course, she also understood that. After all, in his previous life, his later years were not much different from that of a monk.

But now that Pei Wenxuan was putting on an act, not only pretending to be young, but he had also learned to act pure and innocent, making her nauseous. She lifted her hand to cover her face with the fan and gave an order: “Father Emperor is still discussing state affairs. Give him a chair, so he can sit down and wait.”

Having said that, she folded her fan up, picked up her book and continued to read as if minding her own affairs.

Pei Wenxuan took a glance at the book she was reading. It was just another one of those tasteless, garish novels that were full of nonsense. So it turned out that this hobby from her youth has not changed even in old age.

Perhaps she was just reminiscing her youth.

A servant by his side went to serve him tea. The two looked like strangers as they remained seated. Not long after Pei Wenxuan had sat down, Fu Lai came out and looked at Pei Wenxuan, “Pei daren, His Majesty has given the order to call you in.”

“Wait,” Li Rong interrupted Fu Lai, “Bengong has been sitting here for half a day, so why did Father Emperor call him in first and not me?”

“Princess,” Fu Lai had a strained smile, “Pei daren has more pressing concerns.”

“What could he have that is so urgent?” Li Rong revealed a suspicious expression, “He…isn’t his pressing concern just…”

Li Rong pointed to herself and didn’t say anything more. She kept staring at Fu Lai as if she would not let this matter go if he didn’t let her in.

Fu Lai had a bitter expression on his face and was about to say something when he heard Li Ming’s voice from inside, “Call both of them in.”

Fu Lai breathed a sigh of relief and hurriedly invited the two of them in together.

Li Rong looked at Pei Wenxuan with a triumphant look on her face. Pei Wenxuan raised his eyebrows and softly chuckled.

After entering the hall and saluting Li Ming, she discovered that there were a group of ministers sitting next to him and appeared to be discussing something important with Li Ming. The Left Prime Minister, Right Prime Minister,1 and the seven ministers that headed their respective ministry departments of the reigning dynasty, all these powerful individuals were gathered here. Li Rong seemed a bit shocked to see them, and then she sheepishly said, “Father Emperor, how about I go back first?”

[1] Left and Right Prime Ministers — the Prime Minister is the highest official position, but there were sometimes two Prime Ministers. The Left Prime Minister oversees civil affairs while the Right Prime Minister oversees military affairs, with the Left being senior to the Right.

Li Ming couldn’t help but smile when he heard Li Rong’s words: “Weren’t you very almighty and powerful when you came in? Why are you leaving now that you’re here? Stand up,” Li Ming lifted his chin to the side, “Stand behind me.”

Li Rong seemed a little embarrassed as she stood up and obediently went to stand behind Li Ming. Then Li Ming turned his gaze to Pei Wenxuan and calmly asked: “Didn’t you leave the palace just now? Why are you back again?”

“Your Majesty,” Pei Wenxuan’s voice was slightly shaking, “This humble official just left the palace and was ambushed on the road by the second Yang gongzi. This humble official just wanted to keep his life and while defending himself accidentally…the second Yang gongzi…”

After he said that, Pei Wenxuan humbly kowtowed, and a “cang” resounded throughout the room. The sound made Li Rong’s scalp tingle. She felt its painfulness just thinking about it, then she heard Pei Wenxuan say, “Was killed!”

Everyone in the room was shocked when these words came out. Left Prime Minister Shangguan Xu exclaimed: “What did you say?! Who did you kill?!”

“Yang…” Pei Wenxuan’s voice quivered as if he hadn’t stabilized his emotions yet. He could not say it after several tries, “Yang…”

“Shangguan daren,” Right Prime Minister Su Minzhi who was sitting beside him calmly said, “This young gongzi is still young and has suffered a great catastrophe. How can he speak clearly if you have frightened him like this, Shangguan daren?” Su Minzhi turned his head and offered his consolation, “Don’t be afraid. Just speak and clarify, who did you kill?”

Pei Wenxuan did not answer. After some time, he took in a deep breath and looked up at Li Ming, “Your Majesty, this humble official killed Yang Quan, the second son of the Yang family.”

There was silence among everyone who was present. This time around, Pei Wenxuan seemed to have newfound determination after accepting that he might have to die anyways. He smoothly narrated the entire exchange, from how he saved the Princess and confronted Yang Quan to his conversation with Yang Quan today in front of the Imperial Study. Yang Quan threatened to kill him, then on his way home, Yang Quan actually ambushed him, and in the end, he killed Yang Quan.

After Pei Wenxuan finished his entire story, he said in a low voice: “This humble official knows that he is guilty. Although the second Yang gongzi was the one who ambushed this humble official first, the Yang family has labored and meritoriously served our Great Xia. Not to mention that there is still war ahead. Second Yang gongzi wanted to take this humble official’s life. This humble official should not have fought back against the second Yang gongzi for the sake of the country. It was just that there was no time to think at that moment, just the desire to live, which has led to a terrible catastrophe, Your Majesty…”

Pei Wenxuan’s voice was choked as he bowed his head: “Even if this humble official is sentenced to death by a thousand cuts, this humble official will have no regrets and only hopes that Your Majesty will know of this early on and avoid disaster.”

Each and every one of Pei Wenxuan’s words reached everyone’s ears and alarmed their hearts.

Pei Wenxuan had said that he should die by a thousand cuts, but among all the things he said, was there a single thing that was not used to denounce and condemn? Yang Quan was only a gongzi of the Yang family, yet he dared to abduct the Princess and even dared to kill an imperial court official out of jealousy. Both of them were severe crimes and punishable by death.

It was just that Pei Wenxuan was right about one thing. At the present, the Yang family has been exercising military authority at the border for many years and acquired a lot of prestige. Even if they had actually done these things and must be punished, it must be handled with careful consideration.

Especially now with the dire situation at the border. Once the Yang family is provoked and something goes wrong, no one would dare take responsibility.

For that reason, none of the people present chose to speak up. All of them were silent. Li Ming’s expression was calm. He picked up a cup of tea and took a sip. After a while, he slowly began to say, “What are you afraid of?”

Pei Wenxuan lowered his head, not daring to speak. Li Ming raised the cup and slammed it down as he shouted: “You are an official of Great Xia’s imperial court. That Yang Quan dared to assassinate you out in the open in broad daylight. You have already killed him, so what are you afraid of?!”

“Your Majesty…” Pei Wenxuan trembled, “The border…”

“Does his Yang family dare to commit treason?!” Li Ming irritably shouted, then he looked at the surrounding ministers, “Zhen has already told you all just now that the Yang family could not hold off against a single blow from the enemy when the Rong State invaded this time, making Great Xia lose all face! 50,000 soldiers could not hold off 20,000 enemy troops! They were even besieged! Now they dare to abduct the Princess and assassinate court officials in Huajing, does his entire Yang clan think Zhen is dead?!”

“Please calm down, Your Majesty.”

Seeing that Li Ming was so furious, everyone hastily knelt down. Shangguan Xu quickly spoke up to persuade him: “Your Majesty, victory and defeat are common in military affairs. Now with the Rong State’s sudden invasion, the Yang clan could not have foreseen this and was caught off guard. They are still on the front lines, so nevertheless, it’s better to deal with this…”

“You shut up for Zhen!

Li Ming picked up a book and threw it down. It flew straight at Shangguan Xu and hit him in the face. Li Rong revealed a panicked expression as she looked at Shangguan Xu and then at Li Ming. She looked like she wanted to say something but did not dare to speak up. Li Ming was furiously panting for breath and eying the people that were present: “Zhen has decided on this case. At this point, the Yang family has insulted the Imperial family, Zhen wants them investigated, thoroughly investigated! Who will handle this case?!”

No one in the room dared to speak up because they each had their own plans.

The centipede may be dead but not yet a stiff carcass. Shangguan Xu spoke up for the Yang family, which shows that the Shangguan clan might still join hands with the Yang clan. On such occasions, the aristocratic families were not willing to participate in the Imperial family’s disputes.

Li Ming nodded: “Good, very good, all of you are afraid of them. Pei Wenxuan,” Li Ming turned his head and looked at Pei Wenxuan, “Since you have dared to kill him, Zhen will ask you, if this case is given to you, would you dare to investigate?”

“Your Majesty!” Hearing this, Pei Liwen, the minister of the Ministry of Public Works who had been silent, raised his head and anxiously said, “Wenxuan is still young and cannot shoulder this…”

“Did Zhen ask you?” Li Ming shouted, cutting Pei Liwen off. Pei Lixian, who had been kneeling next to him, gave Pei Liwen a meaningful look and shook his head.

Pei Liwen did not dare to speak anymore. Li Ming stared at Pei Wenxuan: “Speak.”

Pei Wenxuan took in a deep breath and straightened his back: “This humble official is willing to share Your Majesty’s worries!”

“Good.” Li Ming went ahead to say, “The very next day, you will go to Imperial Censorate and assume the position of an imperial censor and investigate the Yang clan’s case alongside the Ministry of Justice.”1

[1] Imperial Censorate – high-level supervisory agency that monitored and investigated government officials at every level to prevent corruption and malfeasance; nevertheless, imperial censors were seen more as the “eyes and ears” of the Emperor than enforcers of the law.

“Your Majesty,” Shangguan Xu couldn’t help but speak up, “Pei Wenxuan said that he is the victim, this minister fears that it will not be good to let him take over the investigation.”

“Shangguan daren will investigate then?”

When Li Ming questioned him, Shangguan Xu fell silent for a moment. Just as he was about to speak, he heard Li Rong’s voice: “How about letting Bengong preside over the case as the chief inspector and Pei daren will assist, how does that sound?”

Everyone looked over upon hearing this. Li Rong discreetly coughed and solemnly said: “This incident also started with Bengong. Bengong is a princess. In terms of rank, it will not be a problem for Bengong to investigate the Yang clan. If there is no suitable candidate among the darens, then Bengong will preside over the investigation while Pei daren handles the case. What do you all think?”

Everyone fell silent the moment Li Rong spoke. Li Ming frowned, and Shangguan Xu also seemed pensive.

Su Minzhi hesitated: “But the Princess is also a victim in this case…”

“Then how about letting Vice Minister Su supervise the case?” Li Rong looked at Su Minzhi. Su Minzhi was stunned as Li Rong proceeded to say, “Bengong heard that Vice Minister Su is a righteous person with integrity. Since the Left Prime Minister is not at ease, how about making Vice Minister Su the chief inspector for this case?”

“The Princess is joking,” Su Minzhi hastily said, “This minister’s son is still young and does not have the ability to handle such a big case.”

“That is why he can supervise the case.” Li Rong interrupted Su Minzhi and looked straight at Shangguan Xu, “What does Uncle think?”

Shangguan Xu pursed his lips. He glanced at Li Rong and hesitated for a moment before finally saying: “This humble official thinks that what the Princess said is quite reasonable.”

LI Rong turned to look at Li Ming and blinked: “Father Emperor?”

Li Ming glanced at Shangguan Xu and knew that if this continued, Shangguan Xu would recommend someone from his side to investigate the case. Now that he has confirmed that there was a relationship between the Shangguan and Yang family, Li Ming feared that it would not be easy to handle them.

So Li Ming nodded and replied: “Since there is no other way, just do as you have said.”

Li Ming sternly added: “Don’t mess around.”

“Don’t worry, Father Emperor,” Li Rong smiled, “I already have a plan.”

Li Ming’s mood gradually stabilized. He looked around and proceeded to pacify Shangguan Xu with a few words, then ordered everyone else to withdraw, leaving Li Rong alone in the study.

Father and daughter were silent for a while before Li Ming said, “Why did you suddenly want to see your Father Emperor today?”

Li Rong lowered her eyes and quietly said: “Your daughter was abducted last night and should have come to see Father Emperor first to report the situation. However, this daughter waited until now to come, so it’s probably too late now.”

Li Ming did not speak. He discovered that Li Rong’s face looked a little tired, and she seemed to have a lot on her mind.

Li Ming could not see through the thoughts of this daughter. He was used to doting on Li Rong, but Li Rong’s own younger brother was the Crown Prince now. He was currently in conflict with Li Chuan, but he didn’t know what Li Rong thought about it.

Li Rong is clever but also a sentimental person. Li Ming had cradled her in the palm of his hand for many years and shown his affection as well. If not for the power struggle, he also hoped that this child could have a good life.

He was silent for a while, but in the end, he didn’t directly ask and only turned around: “After meeting those four people, which one have you taken a fancy to?”

Li Rong was silent. Li Ming hesitated and slowly asked, “What do you think of Pei Wenxuan?”

Li Rong bowed her head and said nothing. Li Ming looked up, rather impatient as he said: “Answer.”

Erchen thinks that he is good.”

He is good, but there are other things that are not good. Li Ming thought about it for a moment and then slowly said: “You only need to worry about whether you like this person or not. There is no need to mind other things.”

Hearing this, Li Rong’s tears fell with every drip drop as if suffering from grievances as vast as the skies.

Li Ming saw Li Rong’s tears and quickly asked, “Why are you crying?”

“Father Emperor,” Li Rong choked back her sobs and said, “This daughter just thinks that we are all one family, why can’t we just treat each other well…”

Li Ming understood what Li Rong said. He thought that the Empress had forced Li Rong to speak favorably about Yang Quan. Although he and the Empress had many disputes, they had never involved their daughter. Now, when it comes to this marriage, there will inevitably be a confrontation. Seeing Li Rong crying like pear blossoms in the rain, he also felt distressed and finally said: “Your Mother Empress and I were wrong in this matter. You don’t have to think too much about it. Just pretend that you don’t know and choose the one you like. Father Emperor will always respect your decision. You and Pei Wenxuan have spent the night alone, you have become his person in that sense. This child is good, and he’s quite handsome. You will not suffer a loss by marrying him.”

Li Rong nodded. Li Ming sighed once more: “Don’t cry anymore, wipe away your tears and carefully think about what Zhen has said. Once Yang Quan’s case has been resolved, Zhen will grant a marriage for the two of you.”

“Yes.”

Li Rong tried to control her voice and raised her head: “Erchen will listen to Father Emperor.”

After comforting Li Rong for some time, Li Ming told her to stand up and called Fu Lai over to see her off. After hearing Li Ming’s words, Fu Lai only laughed and said, “When will it be this servant’s turn to see the Princess off? Pei daren has been waiting for the Princess outside for a long time.”

Li Ming and Li Rong were both a little surprised to hear this. After a moment, Li Ming laughed: “This little boy dares to steal Zhen’s daughter away right in front of Zhen.”

Having said that, Li Ming still urged her: “Alright, hurry up and go. Don’t let this old man delay you young people.”

Li Rong expressed her embarrassment and bowed, then she quickly withdrew.

She walked all the way out of the Imperial Study. When she reached the corridor, she saw Pei Wenxuan standing against the railing, waiting for her. He was wearing azure blue robes with wide sleeves and rolling clouds embroidered with silver silk thread. He was holding a palace lantern and looking up at the moon in the sky.

There was a kind of innate aura of an Immortal in Pei Wenxuan’s appearance that made it difficult for others to approach him. At that moment, as he held the lantern and looked up at the moon, his robes fluttered in the wind, making him seem like an Immortal from the Moon Palace that had descended into the mortal realm and could fly away on the clouds and wind at any time.

Fu Lai took Li Rong to the gates and respectfully said: “Your Highness, this old servant will only send you here. Pei daren will lead the way from here and accompany Your Highness.”

Li Rong nodded and leisurely said: “You may retire.”

Fu Lai heeded the order and withdrew. Pei Wenxuan turned his head at the sound of her voice and looked at her from head to toe. Then he walked up with the lantern and stopped in front of her.

He was naturally tall, so when he faced her, he had to bow his head. Pei Wenxuan began to stare intently at her.

Li Rong saw that he was carefully studying her and felt somewhat embarrassed. She turned her head and asked in a low voice: “What are you looking at?”

“You cried earlier.”

Pei Wenxuan nodded as he came to his own conclusion and passionately said: “Your Highness is nevertheless better than this humble official at heart.”

Li Rong was a bit annoyed to hear this and wryly laughed: “How could it compare to Pei daren, who is capable of bending and stretching and being wise yet courageous?

Taking a step forward with one foot to kill someone, then taking a step back with the other foot to run off and bitterly cry injustice. Such a two-faced act, yet Pei Wenxuan could move back and forth so naturally.

The attendants behind them did not dare to get too close as the two talked, so the two of them walked ahead, shoulder to shoulder. As he walked, Pei Wenxuan said: “I will make it short and simple.”

With that said, Pei Wenxuan briefly summarized what he had said to Li Ming and concluded: “Once Yang Quan’s case is over, His Majesty will push the matters in the Northwest to His Highness the Crown Prince. If His Highness the Crown Prince can handle this matter well,  he will not have to worry about acquiring military power.”

“What if it’s not handled well?” Li Rong thoughtfully tapped the small golden fan against the palm of her hand and indifferently said, “In that case, being directly deposed and demoted to a commoner would be regarded as the most gracious ending for my brother. Pei Wenxuan,” Li Rong gave him a smile that did not reach her eyes, “You dare to bet on this, you are quite bold.”

“If I am not bold,” Pei Wenxuan received Li Rong’s words with a calm expression and calmly asked, “How could I dare to marry you?”

“That is true,” Li Rong nodded, “It’s not easy to marry me. There are many dangers, one after another.”

“Marrying you is not that dangerous,” Pei Wenxuan solemnly replied, “It’s you, you are too fierce and dangerous.”

“That is because you asked to marry me first.” Li Rong glared at him. She increased her pace and strode on ahead.

When Pei Wenxuan realized that she was actually angry, he was afraid that she would lose her temper and do something extreme. He stopped talking and self-consciously touched his nose before he hurried to catch up with her: “Yes, yes, yes, I was the one who asked to marry Your Highness. But Your Highness,” The amusement in his voice gradually faded away, replaced by a more serious tone, “This humble official has something to ask Your Highness.”

“Speak!”

Li Rong said coldly. Pei Wenxuan smiled faintly and observed her face for a bit: “This humble official wanted to ask, earlier in the Imperial Study, why did Your Highness want Su Rongqing to supervise the case?”

Li Rong’s footsteps came to a stop. Pei Wenxuan held the palace lantern and turned to look at her: “How does Your Highness want him to supervise? Is it to take advantage of the process of the investigation to summon Su daren every day or invite Su daren over every day to conduct a joint investigation from dawn to dusk?”

“Moreover,” Pei Wenxuan seemed to think of something and seriously said, “Does the Princess feel that it will not be satisfactory if this humble official investigates? If that is the case, then is that why the Princess let Su daren investigate instead?”

Li Rong did not speak. She brought her eyes up to Pei Wenxuan. Pei Wenxuan smiled, and Li Rong blankly said: “Pei Wenxuan.”

“Hm?” Pei Wenxuan raised his eyebrows. Li Rong coldly said, “Can you stop pretending for a moment?”

Pei Wenxuan’s expressions stiffened. Li Rong raised her hand and used her index finger and thumb to pinch a small amount of space. She brought her hand up in front him and said in all seriousness: “Look closely, what is this?”

“What?” Pei Wenxuan frowned.

Li Rong kept a serious face. With powerful and resonating words, she said: “Your mind and heart!”2

[2] Small hearts and minds represents a narrow-mindedness and pettiness.

Autumn: There will be a special update in the coming weeks (will also be updated on Ko-Fi) to support the author.

A Note on the Left and Right Prime Ministers

In the previous life, Pei Wenxuan became the Left Prime Minister. I originally translated Left Prime Minister as Prime Minister to avoid confusion…and because I forgot that the Right Prime Minister also made some cameos/guest appearances (>_<) That is fixed though!

Since the Left and Right Prime Ministers are powerful arms of the Emperor, you would intuitively think that the Right Prime Minister is the more senior position since the majority of people are right-handed. However, civil officials outrank military officials in the imperial court, so the Left Prime Minister who oversees civil affairs is the most senior official. Though, as nopenopenope mentioned below in the comments, this had to do with the palace feng shui and rising sun.

Thoughts and Ramblings

Fourth-wall Breaking Content!! Li Rong reading “trashy romance” novels, and Pei Wenxuan, the male lead of a romance novel, writes the genre off as “tasteless, garish novels that were full of nonsense.” And not to mention: “So it turned out that this hobby from her youth has not changed even in old age.” This line really spoke to me and will probably be true for me haha :’)

Pei Wenxuan has some fun lines, especially the ones from his two-faced scholar Green Tea script. It is some good tea. 🍵

  1. The Left Prime Minister is primary because the left is associated with the rising sun/primacy. The east palace is the crown prince palace because the east is on the left, or the side with the rising sun, the dowager empresses palace is in the west, associated with the setting sun. All this comes from feng sui custom that the main house (central palace) sits on the north and faces the south. Took me forever to figure that out.
